Lange wrote in about a change that's got the neighbourhood split: Greater Sydney Parklands has told its security staff to crack down on learner drivers in Callan Park, with a $150 fine for L-platers. He says he taught two of his kids the basics there: "a perfect environment for L-Platers to become comfortable with the basics of operating [a] vehicle before entering busier roads." Now his last daughter's an L-plater too, and the free training ground five minutes from home is off the cards. Here's a bit of strange map lore for you. Nearly all of Annandale sits on the Inner West Council side of Johnstons Creek, which is the line that usually splits us from the City of Sydney. But right on the corner of Booth St and Wigram Rd, the boundary takes an odd swerve and leaves a little pocket of Annandale marooned inside the City of Sydney instead. Call it the Annandale Triangle, a tiny DMZ between two councils. It holds one apartment block plus the building that houses the Yoga Factory. If you're one of the lucky few living in the Triangle, we'd love to hear what life is like on the other side of the line. Consider this the sequel to the last time the Troll looked at Annandale's contested borders in Edition 11.

Artisans in the Park runs tomorrow (Sat 5 Sep) at the Tramsheds, Forest Lodge, from 10am to 3pm. Maggie, who helps run the volunteer market, wrote in: "As a not-for-profit market, our aim is to support local artisans while giving back to the community through our charitable initiatives." Stallholder Alison flagged the timing too: "It's inside and air conditioned coz I hear it's forecast to be 30 degrees - yikes." The council has released a blueprint PDF calling on the state government for a 'permanent rapid transit service' along Parramatta Road, which likely means a light rail and better bus and cycling links. The document pitches the service to support up to 8,000 new homes planned for the corridor. For now it's advocacy rather than funding, and some locals want to see firm commitments before the population climbs. It's definitely interesting as far as council PDFs go, and worth a flick. A local spotted a tall white bird picking its way through the shallows at the Whites Creek ponds and wasn't sure what to make of it. An albino heron, maybe? Neck stretched low over the reeds, yellow bill fixed on the water, it had a proper heron look about it. The verdict from neighbours: a great egret, not albino anything.
