Neighbours float idea for what’s next

Inspired by the new seafood shop moving into Booth St, a local reader has suggested a quick poll on what Annandale should welcome next. Add your pick here and I’ll share the results next week. You never know who might be listening. (Thanks for the suggestion Marge)

Annandale’s Christmas tree is up

Annandale’s community Christmas tree went up yesterday outside the Village Church on the corner of Booth and Johnston Street, making sure Santa has no excuse to fly past 😉 (Source Annandale 2038 Facebook Page)

New fish market build nears opening date

Construction on the new Sydney Fish Market is finished and crews are now busy with fit-outs and testing as they work toward the 19 January 2026 opening. More details here

Goodbye to greyhound racing, hello to parkland

Across the creek, Wentworth Park will close in 2027. The greyhound track will make way for parkland, sports fields and open space. The announcement lit up Clover Moore’s Facebook page, with many calling it “the best infrastructure news in years” and thanking council for “returning the space to the people.” Others were less convinced, arguing the fields should stay for junior sport or the buildings could be reused for community facilities.

Annandale’s musical roots run deeper than you think

In response to Mal’s music article shared in Issue 8, a Booth Street neighbour writes to remind us that while the music shops have gone and the Annandale Hotel no longer hosts regular live acts, the suburb still has some musical pedigree. Peter Garret from Midnight Oil, Ian Moss from Cold Chisel and Peter Oxley from the Sunnyboys, all have ties to Annandale. Also, seen in Supabarn on 2 occasions, Phil Punch, a famous producer and musician. (Source: Reader Shane)

How Annandale’s border took shape

Annandale’s borders, as drawn by someone with more curiosity than drafting ability

A reader flagged that the map in Issue 6 missed the triangle of streets between Parramatta Rd, Johnstons Creek and Booth/Mallett St… thanks, Ian! The correction sent me digging into Annandale’s boundary history, which revealed more than I bargained for, including Australia’s only military coup. I’ve wrapped it into a 4minute read for anyone who enjoys walking our streets with a bit of context in their pocket. Read it here.

A big thanks to Marghanita da Cruz for her local research, which helped shape this piece. You can find her books at Annandale Village Newsagent and website here
