Editor's Note

The Troll’s census is now closed and given the turnout, I thought it was only fair to draw three winners. Congrats (by random selection) to those with email addresses that include “nurturing”, “billie” or “adam”. There may be a few of you with these, so don’t get too excited just yet. If you won a prize, I’ll confirm by email before the end of the day!

Sharing another result that ties in nicely with some of this week’s news. When we asked what Annandale is missing, more than a quarter of you asked for a street party, festival, fair or fete. Others just want to “bring chairs, brownies, pots of tea, and meet and mingle”. It’s a thread I’d love to keep pulling and I’m keen to help spread your ideas around.

I’ve (tried my best) to group your answers into themes (see graphic below) but the true beauty is in the comments. Have a read in the letters section below.

Ps apologies for my late replies to some emails & the lag b/w local interviews. I had a back injury that set me back last month and I’m playing a bit of catchup!

Village News

Annandale's Boo Crew wants your house on the map

Good news for the trick-or-treaters! Council has approved both road closures for Sat 31 Oct.

  • Trafalgar St, b/w Booth St and Piper St South, 3 to 6pm

  • Annandale St, b/w Rose St and Gray St, 4 to 9pm (thanks Hannah for the updates!)

Even better, a few local mums have taken the initiative to help map out a Halloween trail for the whole suburb but they need your help. Add your home to the trail. The map will be available from www.spookydale.com.au from next week. I’m selfishly stoked about this.. my back will be grateful for a plan B ;)

PS. there's also an "Annandale Mombies" flash mob b/w 6 to 7pm on Annandale St (Source: Annandale 2038 FB & Hannah)

He wrote the book on clean energy. In 1994.

Annandale local Gavin Gilchrist was writing about clean energy long before rooftop solar was mainstream. His book The Big Switch came out in 1994. In 2017 he started Inner West Community Energy, a volunteer group that’s now a registered charity.

This month it’s running Electrify Inner West, a community event for anyone thinking about going electric. It’s at Leichhardt Town Hall on Sat 24 Oct, 10am–1pm. The invitation is open to everyone: homeowners, apartment owners or anyone looking for independent guidance on making the switch to electric. Peter Garrett delivers an opening address at 11am, followed by the audience-led Q&A. The scope includes solar, batteries, heat pumps, hot water, induction cooking, EV charging & getting off gas. Free entry, registration recommended: events.humanitix.com/electrify. (Source: Gav)

Seventeen species of hoverfly call Annandale home

Those tiny striped helicopters hovering around your flowers this spring aren't bees or wasps. They're hoverflies and Annandale is home to at least 17 different species. The adults pollinate, the larvae eat aphids, and their numbers often peak in early spring, so keep an eye out. Also worth a look on warm evenings: Bogong moths feeding on bottlebrush flowers. They're having a bumper year, and it's genuinely wonderful to see them back in such numbers.

This comes from a local entomologist (insect scientist) Tanya, who’ll keep contributing to the Troll to boost our collective-local-critter knowledge :) You can read more of her work on the conversation here. (Source: Tanya)

Village Church on Johnston St opens a Divorce Care course

It's a course for anyone navigating separation, whether it’s happening now or was years ago. It’s video-based and the church is upfront that it comes from a Christian perspective but it’s designed to help regardless of your spiritual beliefs. The first session was last night but Damien said your still welcome to register your interest here. (Source: Village Church FB)

Ten makers, one Annandale driveway

Tomorrow (Sat 17th Oct) the driveway of 6 William St, (near the Tramsheds) transforms into a pop-up makers market as part of Sydney Craft Week's Front Yard Trail. Host Sue has gathered nine other creators, with ceramics, knitted goods, handmade books, wildlife illustrations and Carolyn's cookies all on offer. Several are Annandale locals and Sue's invited the whole neighbourhood along from 10am to 4pm. It's Annandale's only Craft week’s trail stop. See a preview on instragram. (Source: Local artist Sue)

A local puts Annandale’s planning changes into 3D

Feedback on Council’s draft Our Fairer Future Plan 2 closes Wed 28 Oct. To help, a local, Matt, has built a 3D model that lets you slide between today's buildings and the proposed envelopes. Have a squiz here. It's unofficial but may be useful for getting your head around the proposed changes. Judging by the comments, it’s cutting both ways: it’s prompted some people to put in feedback and eased others’ concerns. Eitherway, It’s another great local initiative that adds value to some of those in our community and we should celebrate that! (Source: Annandale 2038 FB)
