From 1890 to 1912, local shoe merchant Walter Goodman raised the elegant Goodman's Buildings on Johnston Street. He lived upstairs and leased the shopfronts below, which have hosted generations of small businesses. (Click the sketch to read more)

Editor’s Note

Thanks to everyone who joined last week’s poll. Clover came out on top with 10 of 50 votes!

A special thanks to Ali, Anne, Eloise, Julia, Mark and Marge for their thoughtful feedback, it helped shape this week’s Troll beautifully and I encourage more of it!

If you missed the Highroyd inspection last week, Channel 10 filmed a short clip about it (link), offline they kindly gave a nod to troll too, saying it was a follow up from last weeks story, the troll passes on this nod to reader Daniel for the suggestion.

And finally, a call to action from me to you, if The Troll’s been brightening your week, pass it on! Forward the email or text the website to a couple of neighbours (bonus points if you shout it over the fence). It’s little things like this that help keep Annandale chatting and connected 🙂

Memory Lane: Before Annandale

Before sharing stories from Annandale’s history, it’s important we start this series by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of this land.

Annandale stands on the Country of the Eora Nation, cared for by the Gadigal and Wangal clans whose connection to the harbour and its creeks stretches back countless generations. Remnant bush at Blackwattle Bay still holds traces of their food sources: fish, birds and rock oysters. Remembering that Annandale stands on Eora Country deepens the story of this place, which began long before the suburb’s streets were named. Read more (link).

Village News

Renewed push for light rail along Parramatta Road

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has revived a long-discussed plan for a light rail line running from Leichhardt to Central Station and on to Green Square. In a Facebook post on 22 October, she described the project as crucial to revitalising Parramatta Road, one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.

The proposed route would run along the southern edge of Annandale, potentially improving local connections but also raising questions about congestion, parking and infrastructure capacity. Supporters argue it would boost public transport and active travel, while others worry about the impact of construction and cost.

You can watch a short video of the proposal (link skip the intro by starting at 25 seconds), Clover Moore has also shared an open letter residents can sign in support (link).

From bad mulch to brown leaves

Several locals have noticed the banksia trees on the new Rozelle Interchange pedestrian overpass looking a little brown around the edges. Posts on the Annandale 2038 Facebook group suggest the plants may be struggling with drainage or irrigation issues.

Many residents say they hope the problem can be fixed soon, as the greenery has been one of the most appreciated features of the new walking link. Source: Annandale 2038 Facebook group

Low-Perching Tawny Needs Care

Following up on last week’s photo, a local resident sent an email to say the Tawny Frogmouth chick has been perching low, so please keep dogs leashed and give it plenty of space (great pictures included below :). The same pair sadly lost a chick last year, and it would be heart breaking for that to happen again. It’s fine to show kids from a distance, but don’t get too close. WIRES advises leaving the chick where it is, the parents will return to guide it safely back up the tree. Source: local resident email; WIRES guidance.

Creek Care and Composting

A local resident emailed to say neighbours had raised worries about the Whites Creek Park waterways not being maintained. The good news is that Council has since resumed regular care, with staff on site every Wednesday to manage upkeep. And for those keen on composting, Whites Creek Community Garden welcomes food scraps: a simple, hands-on way for kids to learn about sustainability. Source: Local resident email.

Bulky waste safety on Annandale streets

A local resident emailed in about a late-night incident on Annandale Street last month, where a couch left out for collection was set alight and damaged a parked car. It’s a timely reminder to only put bulky waste out as close to the scheduled pickup day as possible.

And for those of us who tend to book our collections and promptly forget about them (me) consider setting a reminder. It might save a car, a couch, or at least some neighbourly eye-rolling. source: Local resident email.
