The Troll is about to turn 1! What started as a small project has grown into some I’ve genuinely loved doing.
I’ve met some inspiring people along the way, often through your replies and recommendations and I hope this newsletter has helped you discover and/or connect with new things in our neighborhood too.
To mark the occasion, I thought it'd be fun to one-up the ABS and run our own Annandale Census: from croissants to housing. Keep an eye out for it next week.

The wine bar we wanted?
Back in July we got stuck into the great debate: does Annandale deserve a new wine bar of its own? While we were busy talking, Sophia and Wez went and opened one on St Johns Road in Glebe. Kisa has been going a few weeks now, a romantic little corner spot in a heritage terrace on St Johns Rd, all buttery yellow walls, mismatched furniture and hand-painted tiles. There's Eastern European wine and a home-baked cake most days. Sounds pretty good. Not quite on our doorstep, but close enough to wander over. Broadsheet had a good review.
Raspberries born of Annandale forest
Eloise wrote in after a baking session with the kids. "Raspberries came from the Whites Creek food forest - they are native raspberries. Kids love picking from the bush," she says of the banana and raspberry muffins pictured. Her hope is that others give it a go: "[I] thought you could inspire others to cook using ingredients from the food forest and for more kids to head to the bush for some picking."

A run club for the Dale, maybe
A local has floated the idea of a weekly Annandale run club, with a walk option and a coffee afterwards, and plenty of neighbours are keen. Best of all, it's shaping up as a come-one-come-all sort of thing. Fast, slow, back-of-the-pack, happy to stop and smell the flowers along the way, everyone's welcome. Times and pace are still up in the air, but the appetite is clearly there.
While we wait to see if it gets legs, the Troll's off to snoop the local Strava routes to see where the Dale actually likes to run. More on that next week. (Source: Annandale 2038 FB Group)
Stink on Nelson St
A post on Facebook from a Nelson St resident says about five teenagers on bikes entered her home last week while the front door sat open, setting off a stink bomb that banged loudly inside. No one was hurt. Neighbours nearby reported the group trying door and gate handles along the street. Police have recorded it as illegal entry. Views on the street differ, with some calling it a harmless kids' prank and others unsettled. (Source: Annandale 2038 FB Group)
Trafalgar St Party
Remember the Trafalgar St crew who floated closing the road for Halloween? We covered it last year in Edition 6, and there's been good movement since. The council has made it simpler to apply to host a street party, so this year the trick-or-treaters really might get their own patch of bitumen. There's also a new Spookiest House in the Inner West competition, with credit going to Cr Kerrie Fergusson for getting it going. More info on the IWC site. (Source: Darcy Byrne FB Page)
Summer's writing takes gold
A young local has done the Dale proud. Summer, a student at Annandale Public School, has been named a gold medallist in the state WriteOn competition, a writing contest for school kids across NSW. A gold medal for the written word feels right for a suburb that counts a few authors and artists among its own. Well done Summer. (Source: Annandale Public School FB Page)
Council Watch
Annandale is in the housing plan
On Wednesday the council put the second stage of its Our Fairer Future housing plan out for community feedback, and Annandale is in the frame. Independent planners went block by block through parts of the suburb, mostly around light rail stops and main streets, mapping where new apartments, houses and affordable homes could sit. As expected, local residents groups are already warning of lost heritage, tree canopy and parking. Have a dig through the website here, but be warned, there are A LOT of documents.
