The little pantry at Whites Creek
Have you noticed the phone booth down at Whites Creek garden? It's our local food pantry, and next week I am sharing an interview with Sally Gillespie who is behind it. She has an awesome story and is a great writer and community member, so keep your eyes peeled.
Annandale on the Olympic marathon map
Digging through some local history, I turned up a sketch plan of the Sydney 2000 Olympic marathon, with the route running from the North Sydney through to Annandale and on to the stadium at Homebush. I'm curious, and I can't quite tell how it went through the suburb. Does anyone remember it? Where was the route? If you were there that day, or you've got a photo tucked away, I'd love to see it.
Hinsby Park takes the playground crown
The votes are in, and Hinsby Park's freshly upgraded playground on Piper St came out on top of last week's poll of 62 readers, edging out Federal Park by a whisker. Federal Park had its champions too, and one thing came up again and again for both spots: the shade, the coffee across the road, and the small matter of where to find a toilet. The grand old girl on Collins St
There's a then-and-now doing the rounds on Facebook, and this one's worth the click. It's the twin-towered Victorian villa on Collins St, the sort that stops you mid-stride. Someone was struck by it walking past, then dug up a 1970 photo of the same house and went for another look. Have a look here. (Source: Annandale 2038 FB Group)
Sing Out fills the turbine hall
The choir festival we flagged at White Bay Power Station turned into a proper day out. Around 700 singers from 14 choirs filled the old turbine hall on Sunday, drawing more than 3,000 people through those cavernous industrial spaces. Among them were three of our own from the Dale. Organisers were so chuffed they're now planning to run it every year. Fingers crossed the Songlarks are back for round two. (Pics: Inner West Council Instagram)
The bin sin
Several streets around Annandale say their yellow and green bins have gone weeks without a pickup. Some residents report logging complaints and hearing it's a contractor problem, with council promising a 48-hour turnaround. Frustration has spilled over into blunt stickers taped to bins aimed at the collectors, which some say only antagonises the crews. It's a tough logistical job, but it's frustrating when it gets outsourced, because it used to be bread-and-butter for council. (Source: Annandale 2038 FB Group)
Doing the Annandale Waltz
One local got a lovely surprise this week, waking to the radio alarm just as ABC Classic introduced the "Annandale Waltz". It was written by composer Ross Edwards for his wife Helen, a pianist, and locals recall the couple living on Annandale St for years. Have a listen. (Source: Annandale 2038 FB Group)
A Leichhardt studio opens up for the Royal Art Society
Peter Griffen wrote in about a fundraiser at his and Denise Lithgow's Leichhardt studio. "We are all volunteers and not for profit," he wrote. "This is one way that we have come up with to keep the historic Royal Art Society [of NSW] on its feet. We have a warehouse home and studio and enjoy working with the community." The Soiree for the Building Fund is on tomorrow, Sat 22 Aug, 5-7pm at 21 Emma St, $60 with wine and nibbles. Organisers say a few spots remain.
