Editor's Note

I spent half this week chasing an electrician to sort out some dodgy lights. He said he'd come, then went quiet - ghosted, in the end. Which got me thinking: finding a tradie you can actually trust is harder than it should be. Google reviews you can't believe a word of and strangers spamming the Facebook group.

I'd bet the Troll readers can help solve this: vote below, then comment who you'd actually recommend. Share your favourites (they’ll love you for it). I'll follow up and share a list of the best next week.

PS I also met with Mickie Quick this week, the artist of the Troll sculpture but more on that in next weeks edition :)

Polystyrene joins the Dale's growing recycling list

Back in March the Troll flagged a new blister pack recycling bin at Annandale Village Pharmacy. Now council has added another hard-to-recycle material to the list: polystyrene. A trial program, run with the EPA, lets residents drop expanded polystyrene at the Leichhardt Community Recycling Centre for free, or book a HomeCycle doorstep pickup. The collected material gets extruded into a hard plastic product used in construction projects. Council says the Inner West sends somewhere between 22 and 66 tonnes of polystyrene to landfill each year. (Source: Inner West Council FB Page)

$27m car park planned for White Bay

The state budget has set aside $27 million for a car park at the White Bay Cruise Terminal, across Rozelle Bay inside the Bays West precinct (that the government has marked as low-car). Local MP Kobi Shetty reckons the car park spend is "a total waste of public money", and says the funds should go to housing, parkland and public transport instead. That said, for perspective on that number, there is a separate $500 million council plan for parks, paths and facilities that was put to residents back in November. (Source: Kobi Shetty FB Page)

Get your art in before the Glebe show fills up

The Glebe Art Show is back this year, and despite the name it's ours as much as Glebe's - it takes artists who live, work or study anywhere across Inner West Council, and usually more than half the entrants come from our side of the creek. So if you've got a canvas leaning against the spare room wall, this is your nudge. Entries open online on Sat 29 Aug, with the Show itself running in October at the Tramsheds. Around 200 works go up, all for sale. Whether you're entering or just after a good afternoon looking at what your neighbours have been making, mark the date. Details and entry at Glebe Art Show 2026.

The draft plan for the Parramatta Road rezoning lands late this year and it includes new height and density controls for the stretch through the Inner West, including Annandale’s southern boundary. If you own here, the obvious question is what 8,000 new homes does to values. My view: they’ll be apartments on a main road, and what buyers fight for in Annandale is a terrace on a quiet street. That market hasn’t blinked – Annandale house prices rose about 5 per cent over the past year, to a median around $2.4 million according to YIP Annandale suburb profile even as Sydney’s clearance rate has been cemented in the low to mid 40% zone for the past 15 weeks. Units are the softer story, down about 4 per cent. The rezoning widens that gap. It doesn’t close it.
